Winchesters Model 1873 Sporting Rifle 24 inch factory #2 Round Barrel. The serial number of this early "Third Model" is 100081 placing the date of manufacture in 1882. The Buffalo Bill Museum "Worksheet" that will accompany this rifle at time of shipment provides the following description: Model: 1873, Serial Number: 100081, Date received into the Warehouse: September 15th, 1882, Type: Rifle, Caliber: Blank (correct), Barrel Shape: Round, Trigger: Plain, Date shipped from the Warehouse: September 19th, 1882, Order Number: None, Shipping Information: None, R&R: None. This Model 1873 is an early "Third Model". This rifle was assembles with remaining 1st& 2nd Model parts. Nothing went to waist during a Model change. Left over or remaining parts always were used until full production of the newer or modified parts were available. Often times referred to as "Transistional or Clean up guns", this example has it all. The barrel is a 2nd model #2 heavier barrel. The rear sight is a 1st model(semi-clover leaf) very rare and in minty condition. No caliber marking on the barrel or brass follower, all correct. Overall condittion of this rifle is near excellent. The barrel and magazine have retained 97=5 original deep rust factory blue. The bore is perfect with morror shine breech to muzzle. The bore will rate a 10 on a 1 to 10 scale! The receiver has retained 75% of the original factory blue the remainder toning to a very pleasant patina. Strong case colors can be seen on the hammer. The brass follower is unpolished and is toning to a nice even mustard/marbled patina. The action is tight, smooth and mechanically perfect! Wood to metal fit is perfect. Most factory varnish remains.
