Winchesters Model 1873 Third Model with correct "Step Down" receiver .38-40wcf. The serial number of this rifle is 1762XX placing date of manufacture in 1885. The Buffalo Bill Museum "Worksheet" that will accompany this rifle at time of shipment provides the following description: Model: 1873, Date into the Warehouse: April 16th, 1885, Type: Rifle, Caliber/Gauge: .38, Barrel Shape: Round, Trigger: Plane, Date Shipped from the Warehouse: April 16th, 1885, Order Number: 20136. The round barrel and magazine have retained approx. 70% of the original factory finish. There is a corrosion spot on the top of the barrel just behind the front sight. (not bad) The bore is minty and will rate a 9.9 on a 1 to 10 scale.(well taken care of) The receiver has retained approx. 95++% original factory blue with a tight, smooth and mechanically perfect action. The loading gate has retained 90% original factory fire blue. The brass follower is clearly marked .38 and is unpolished. The brass follower has a nice mellow mustard patina. Case colors can still be seen on the lever and hammer. Traces of case colors can be seen on the Butt Plate, however it is mostly silvered out. Wood to metal fit is perfect and is "proud" over metal contacts. There is no damage to the wood. The wood has retained approx. 75% of the original factory varnish.
